Do tracers trace?

چکیده

O NLY A FEW YEARS after the discovery of artificial radioisotopes by the Joliot-Curies in 1934, de Hevesy, Chievitz and Ottesen used tracers in hematology. Even today, there are few areas in clinical medicine where as many radioisotopes are used both for investigative and diagnostic purposes as in hematology. Consequently, the methods of tracer studies are often described in the hematologic journals. The methods of interpreting tracer studies are more rarely mentioned, although these methods were described ( for nonradioactive drugs ) as early as in 1937.’ The reason for reviewing them here is the

A General Trace Query Mechanism Based on Prolog

We present a general trace query language which is a solution to the ever growing command sets of other tracers. It provides all the required generality while being very simple and eecient. We model a program execution into a trace which is a stream of events. Execution events have a uniform representation, and can be analysed by Prolog programs. With this approach and thanks to the expressive ...

Observational semantics of the Prolog Resolution Box Model

This paper specifies an observational semantics and gives an original presentation of the Byrd box model. The approach accounts for the semantics of Prolog tracers independently of a particular Prolog implementation. Prolog traces are, in general, considered as rather obscure and difficult to use. The proposed formal presentation of its trace constitutes a simple and pedagogical approach for te...

Rigorous design of tracers: an experiment for constraint logic programming

In order to design and implement tracers, one must decide what exactly to trace and how to produce this trace. On the one hand, trace designs are too often guided by implementation concerns and are not as useful as they should be. On the other hand, an interesting trace which cannot be produced efficiently, is not very useful either. In this article we propose a methodology which helps to effic...

Development of a Prolog Tracer by Stepwise Enhancement

A Prolog tracer is essentially a Prolog interpreter extended to provide features, such as retry, fail, leap, skip, and quasi-skip, to trace the computational ow of a program. This paper describes how a Prolog tracer may be built by stepwise enhancement. Using this method, rst a collection of partial-tracers are developed, each partial-tracer providing only a part of the tracer's functionality. ...
